Animation Installation
2025
This work was created during an artist residency in Japan, in a rural forest where the flow of “ki” can be felt. It is about things that are unseen yet still exist, just like hand drawn animation, where the visible drawings appear on the screen, while the space beyond them remains an imaginative blank.
The roads at night here are very dark. When I drive and my headlights pass over them, I see them. But beyond that moment, I know they stay in the darkness, quietly, steadily, even when unseen.
When you walk into this dark space, bright outdoor light comes through the gaps in the door. Your eyes keep shifting between the bright light and the darkness. This is a good way to feel the limits of what you can see, and to notice what’s beyond your sight.
During the process, I kept adjusting how to control and show the darkness. I wanted it to be a gentle kind of darkness. As you walk in from different levels of sunlight, your body slowly adjusts, and you start to feel how the space changes depending on how you see it. It is hard for video recordings to capture the real experience, and even when unseen, I still hope it exists in truth.
